TikTok has published its latest overview of Community Guidelines Enforcement responses, which outlines all of the videos and accounts that it either removed or otherwise took action on in Q2 this year.

How to scrub your phone number and address from Google search

Washington Post | September 29, 2022

Company Listed: Google

Now, Google says it’s making it easier to request that information be removed from search results. A new shortcut, which Google teased in May, is rolling out in its app and next to search results in the United States during the next two weeks. Before, you could request the removal of that type of information through this form.

The change comes as concerns intensify about the connection between online privacy and real-life safety. This month, stalker forum Kiwi Farms was taken down after forum members spent years harassing women and those who identify as LGBTQ, frequently posting their physical addresses and phone numbers. Victims of domestic abuse are also at risk when their personal information appears online. Some jurisdictions, including the European Union, have adopted a “right to be forgotten,” which grants people the right to ask for their personal information to be deleted from company databases or the internet, but the United States hasn’t adopted such a law.

TikTok updates policy on countering misinformation

Independent Newspaper Nigeria | September 29, 2022

Company Listed: TikTok

Popular video-sharing app, TikTok, remains committed to the fight against misinformation on its platform. To help keep the experience on its platform welcoming and authentic for everyone, TikTok actively removes content which violates its information policies. As part of these efforts, the platform’s report for April-June, published today, has shown visible improvements made in countering misinformation.

Tiktok’s integrity policies aim to promote a trustworthy, authentic experience. Within those, our harmful misinformation policies prohibit content that could mislead our community about civic processes, public health, or safety. For instance, we do not allow medical misinformation about vaccines or COVID-19 and we do not allow misinformation about voting. These policies can be applied to a wide range of content, and that’s by design; this content is constantly changing, often based on what’s happening in the world.

Google is shutting down Stadia, its cloud streaming service for video games, in light of low adoption rates among users, the company announced Thursday on its news portal, The Keyword. Players will be able to access their Stadia game libraries until Jan. 18, 2023.

“While Stadia’s approach to streaming games for consumers was built on a strong technology foundation, it hasn’t gained the traction with users that we expected,” wrote Phil Harrison, VP and general manager at Google working on Stadia. “We’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service.”

The road to a possible TikTok-Congress deal

Columbia Journalism Review | September 29, 2022

Company Listed: TikTok

IN JUNE, BuzzFeed News published an investigative report based on leaked audio from more than eighty internal meetings at TikTok, the popular Chinese-owned video-sharing app. In the report, labeled “The TikTok Tapes,” Emily Baker-White of BuzzFeed wrote that the recordings—along with fourteen statements from nine TikTok employees—revealed that China-based employees of the company “repeatedly accessed nonpublic data about US users of the video-sharing app between September 2021 and January 2022.” As Baker-White pointed out, this directly contradicted a senior TikTok executive’s sworn testimony in an October 2021 Senate hearing, in which the executive said that a “world-renowned, US-based security team” decided who would have access to US customer data.

The reality illustrated by BuzzFeed’s recordings, Baker-White wrote, was “exactly the type of behavior that inspired former president Donald Trump to threaten to ban the app.” Although that proposed ban never materialized, Trump did issue an executive order banning US corporations from doing business with ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, while elected officials President Joe Biden struck down the order last summer, but also directed the Commerce Department to conduct national-security reviews of apps with links to foreign adversaries, including China.
