Submission to the Online Harassment and Abuse Task Force

Article 19 | September 20, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

The organisation made a submission to the task force on 19 September, highlighting a key area of concern: online harassment and abuse, particularly for women and LGBTQI+ human rights defenders, journalists and activists.

ARTICLE 19 has significant experience working on this issue globally, regionally, and nationally, primarily through analysis of existing and draft legislation; training and support to journalists and human rights defenders confronted with online harassment and abuse; multi-stakeholder coalition building; and advocating for strong regional and global policy and protections. Our work on standard setting is based on evidence that the right to freedom of expression and the rights to equality and non-discrimination are mutually reinforcing, and thus inform this submission.

Advisor to Europe’s top court backs antitrust watchdogs looking at privacy

Tech Crunch | September 20, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

A non-binding opinion issued today by an influential advisor to the Europe Union’s top court could foreshadow a major regional development at the intersection of privacy and competition regulation — or ‘privacy vs competition’ as it’s sometimes narrowly framed.

The opinion follows a referral to the Court of Justice (CJEU) related to an appeal by Facebook (aka Meta) which has been challenging a 2019 order by Germany’s competition watchdog (the FCO) against Facebook’s so-called ‘superprofiling’ of users. The FCO’s case argues that the tech giant’s combining of data on users across multiple services and websites — ergo, Facebook’s total denial of users’ privacy — is itself an “exploitative abuse” linked to its market power and therefore also an abuse of competition laws that the FCO is competent to regulate.

TikTok Really Just Not That into US User Data

Techhq | September 21, 2022

Company Listed: TikTok

TikTok is a social media platform not controlled by US billionaires. It’s important to remember that, because right now, we live in a world of multiple overlapping data realities.

On the one hand, the US and China are absolutely mired in an increasingly bitter and petty data war – they each accuse the other of sending cyberspies and cyberattacks after each other’s citizens, organizations and governments, for the very logical reason that they’re both sending cyberspies and cyberattacks after each other’s citizens, organizations and governments.

Online Safety Bill should go back to its original purpose of protecting young from harmful content

Telegraph | September 21, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

The death of Molly Russell in 2017 focused fresh attention on the activities of social media companies and their baleful impact on vulnerable young people. Molly was just 14 when she took her own life after viewing material about self-harm, suicide and depression, on sites such as Instagram and Pinterest.

An inquest is only now getting under way, with internet company executives expected to give evidence about whether their algorithms encourage dangerous online activity. Molly’s father Ian said he hoped the hearing will help produce the change that’s needed to keep people safe, to keep people alive.

T&S FAQs

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.

Is T&S interesting?

That depends. If you enjoy stopping bad actors and keeping good people safe, then you’ll love T&S. It requires understanding new technologies and staying on top of breaking issues across society and the world. It also pays Big Tech salaries (no coding skills required).

How do you get into T&S?

That’s the tricky part. The short answer is: not easily. Most T&S orgs are part of Big Tech and (as a result) pay extremely well, so jobs are highly competitive. If you don’t know someone in the industry who can help refer you in, then you can learn more about T&S policies, current events, issues, regulations, and jobs at trustsafetyinstitute.com to improve your hiring chances and start doing meaningful work that helps people.
