Twitter killed plans for an Only Fans competitor over child porn concerns: report

NY Post | August 30, 2022

Company Listed: Twitter

Twitter was ready to start selling OnlyFans-style porn subscriptions in a bid to boost its revenue — but put the feature on ice earlier this year due to concerns about child porn, according to a new report.

The social media site, which is locked in a court battle with Elon Musk, allows users to post porn but gives them no way to monetize it. Twitter created and considered launching an OnlyFans-like subscription feature that would let porn stars sell nude photos and videos, the Verge reported on Tuesday.

Self-harm posts are surging on Twitter, despite breaking content rules

Washington Post | August 31, 202

Company Listed: Twitter

Twitter users in apparent distress turned to the social media platform earlier this month to mull their next steps: “might just let my Razors win tonight” the user said in a tweet that racked up more than 1,500 likes, 20 comments and 25o retweets.

The post was an example of what researchers from the Network Contagion Research Institute and Rutgers University say is a dramatic rise in recent months of tweets related to self-harm. In a new report, the researchers said they have detected a Twitter community that is increasingly posting graphic photos, with hashtags, that reveal bloody self-injury practices. The tweets are garnering unusually high engagement given the small number of followers of the accounts, the report found.

15 Times Companies Had to Pay Up for Alleged Privacy Blunders

Gizmodo | August 31, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

August 2022 was an expensive month for tech companies. While the industry as a whole continues to reel from a major tech downturn, Meta, Snap, and TikTok all agreed to pay out settlements to put to rest lingering privacy lawsuits. Combined, those payouts total well over $100 million dollars.

Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, just this past week agreed to settle a privacy suit over its disastrous handling of its 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal nearly four years in the making. All of sudden, in an industry where privacy violations often seem the norm, users are beginning to see a flurry of wins.

Protection of children now in sights of Congress, FTC, tech firms

Catholic News | August 31, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Nearly every parent’s biggest worry is how to provide for the health, safety and welfare of their children. It’s a concern that takes many forms: getting them to school safely and back again, serving them the best food and housing them safely. More and more, knowing — really, not knowing — what their child may be doing online is a key worry.

Congress is one important group paying attention — and could be taking action before the current term ends in December. There are proposals to create a new privacy division at the Federal Trade Commission, expand federal protections for children’s data, fund government research into kids’ mental health and urge companies to act in the “best interest of the child.”

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.
