Social Media Hype About Winter Weather Is Coming - How To Be Ready

Forbes | October 19, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

It was a bit chilly for our morning walk here in Georgia so I peddled away on my exercise bike in the basement. In that moment, I was reminded that we are approaching the cold season in the United States. It also means your annual dose of winter weather social media hype and misinformation. Here are some things to be ready for.

Meteorologist Chris Robbins actually wrote the perfect piece on this topic a few years ago on his iWEATHERNET.COM platform. In his article “Beware of Snow Hype & Weather Hoaxes on Social Media,” Robbins, whom I spoke with before writing this essay, noted that the winter season brings the usual batch of “viral” 10-day out snowstorm maps, wishcasting, and general misunderstanding of winter weather forecasting. Weather model information is generally available to everyone, but I constantly tell my classes at the University of Georgia that posting a model graphic does not make you a good weather forecaster. It makes you a good “copy - paste” person. Understanding the nuances of the atmosphere, the models, and communication strategies is vital.

White House “Blueprint for AI Bill of Rights” Creates a Potential Path to Legal AI Ethics Guidelines

CPO Magazine | October 19, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

The White House’s new “Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights” is not any kind of a legally binding measure, but it could be the first step toward wide-scale federal-level regulation of AI.

A similar route was followed in the EU in recent years, with the European Commission creating a voluntary system of AI governance principles roughly three years ahead of drafting a bill that would make many of those guidelines legally enforceable. However, the EU also has a smoother road in this regard given the prior adoption of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) setting related cybersecurity, governance and legal remedy terms in place at the national level.

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.

Is T&S interesting?

That depends. If you enjoy stopping bad actors and keeping good people safe, then you’ll love T&S. It requires understanding new technologies and staying on top of breaking issues across society and the world. It also pays Big Tech salaries (no coding skills required).

How do you get into T&S?

That’s the tricky part. The short answer is: not easily. Most T&S orgs are part of Big Tech and (as a result) pay extremely well, so jobs are highly competitive. If you don’t know someone in the industry who can help refer you in, then you can learn more about T&S policies, current events, issues, regulations, and jobs at to improve your hiring chances and start doing meaningful work that helps people.
