Disinformation in Spanish is prolific on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube despite vows to act

The Guardian | October 06, 2022

Company Listed: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube

Last year, US lawmakers urged the CEOs of major tech companies including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to do more to combat disinformation spreading in Spanish, warning that inaccurate information on key issues such as vaccines and the presidential election was proliferating on their platforms.

“There is significant evidence that your Spanish-language moderation efforts are not keeping pace, with widespread accounts of viral content promoting human smuggling, vaccine hoaxes, and election misinformation,” the lawmakers wrote in a July 2021 letter. “Congress has a moral duty to ensure that all social media users have the same access to truthful and trustworthy content regardless of the language they speak at home or use to communicate online.”

NY Times | October 06, 2022

Alternative social media platforms like Parler, Truth Social and Telegram are often described by progressives as hotbeds for fringe views and by conservatives as havens for free speech. Researchers say there is also another way to think of them: where few Americans go to get their news.

A new report from the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found that only 6 percent of adults regularly seek out news from at least one of the seven more prominent alternative social media sites: BitChute, Gab, Gettr, Parler, Rumble, Telegram and Truth Social.

Baseless attacks by online trolls — whether anonymous or by well-known politicians and public figures — have created a cascade of hate, “underpinned by dangerous misinformation and outright lies against the LGBTQ+ community,” according to recently released research.

That’s the top-line finding of a new report, jointly released by the Center for Countering Digital Hate and the Human Rights Campaign that calls on social media giants Twitter and Meta (which owns Facebook and Instagram) to act on hate speech, even as they profited from LGBTQ users during Pride Month observances and at other times of the year.

Supreme Court poised to rewrite how social media confronts disinformation

Cyberscoop | October 06, 2022

Company Listed: Facebook

The Facebook post showed a gloved hand holding a silver needle alongside a message in bold letters: “Bill Gates explains that the COVID-19 vaccine will use experimental technology and permanently alter your DNA!”

Despite violating Facebook rules to prevent the spread of lies about COVID, that post slipped past the platform’s filters in June 2021. It was just one of many false claims that made it online and fueled national skepticism about the vaccine, and also gave ammunition to social media critics who say tech giants such as Facebook’s parent company Meta, Alphabet and Twitter aren’t doing enough to block disinformation.

‘Big Tech never loses a legislative fight – and they just did’ as package of new bills passes

CNBC | October 06, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Policy advocates who have been pushing for new legislation reining in Big Tech’s power have seen their hopes lifted and shattered several times throughout the past few months.

Last week marked one of the brighter notes for those supporting the push for new antitrust laws, when the House passed a package of bills giving enforcers more resources to go after anti-competitive mergers and giving state attorneys general more power over in which courts they can bring antitrust lawsuits.

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.

Is T&S interesting?

That depends. If you enjoy stopping bad actors and keeping good people safe, then you’ll love T&S. It requires understanding new technologies and staying on top of breaking issues across society and the world. It also pays Big Tech salaries (no coding skills required).

How do you get into T&S?

That’s the tricky part. The short answer is: not easily. Most T&S orgs are part of Big Tech and (as a result) pay extremely well, so jobs are highly competitive. If you don’t know someone in the industry who can help refer you in, then you can learn more about T&S policies, current events, issues, regulations, and jobs at to improve your hiring chances and start doing meaningful work that helps people.
