What a racist massacre tells us about free speech online

Washington Post | May 18, 2022

Company Listed: Twitter

The idea is appealing in its simplicity: Social networks should only take down posts if they violate the law. Otherwise, they should remain.

That’s how billionaire Elon Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist,” has suggested he would run Twitter if he succeeds in acquiring it. The idea has won Musk many fans, especially on the right, who have grown frustrated with social platforms deciding what users can say and what they can’t. Some Republican-led states are also passing laws that would make it illegal for tech companies to remove posts based on users’ viewpoints.

This past weekend, Twitter and other major platforms were once again scrambling to take down posts and videos that were legal under the First Amendment but violated their policies. In this case, the videos showed a gunman, allegedly an 18-year-old white supremacist, slaughtering 10 people in a grocery store in a predominantly Black neighborhood of Buffalo. And the posts included the suspect’s racist screed, for which he seems to have intended the massacre to serve as an advertisement.

Amber Heard supporters bombarded with misogynistic hate from Johnny Depp fans

Nypost | May 18, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

In a “disturbing” case of life imitating true-crime TV, Amber Heard supporters have alleged harassment and threats from Johnny Depp fans on social media.

Since April, the embattled ex-couple — who made headlines all the way back in 2016 during their initial split — has divided millions as a jury decides whether Heard, 36, had defamed Depp, 58, when she signed a 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post, which appeared to accuse her former love of domestic abuse.

Depp is suing the actress for $50 million; Heard subsequently filed a $100 million countersuit.

Shortly after Kade Webb, 20, collapsed and died in a bathroom at a Safeway Market in Roseville, Calif., in December, the police opened his phone and went straight to his social media apps. There, they found exactly what they feared.

Mr. Webb, a laid-back snowboarder and skateboarder who, with the imminent birth of his first child, had become despondent over his pandemic-dimmed finances, bought Percocet, a prescription opioid, through a dealer on Snapchat. It turned out to be spiked with a lethal amount of fentanyl.

How social media posts could affect credit scores

Finchannel | May 18, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Researcher warns of risks with using alternative data in lending. What does your SAT score mean for your ability to pay off a car loan? What does your Facebook feed say about your chances of landing a mortgage? And, what does your propensity for snacking on road trips mean for your credit score? The answers: More than you think.

Traditional credit scoring is based on a person’s demonstrated ability to take on debt and pay it off. But with the dawn of larger data pools and access to more sophisticated modeling programs, lenders and credit agencies are taking more nonfinancial factors into rating creditworthiness, particularly those without an extensive credit history. This group tends to include vulnerable populations who are often more susceptible to predatory lending practices.

Texas, 12 states fire back at tech industry in Supreme Court filings

Washington Post | May 18, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Texas on Wednesday filed a petition calling on the Supreme Court to reject an emergency application seeking to block a state law regulating content moderation decisions at large social media companies.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton argued that the state law, which bars platforms from blocking users based on viewpoint, is focused on businesses’ conduct and does not violate the First Amendment, which protects private companies from government regulation of speech. In his response to the petition, filed by tech industry groups, he says that social media platforms are the “twenty-first century descendants of telegraph and telephone companies” and that they should be treated as “common carriers,” which are subject to government regulation because of the essential nature of the services they offer.

T&S FAQs

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.

Is T&S interesting?

That depends. If you enjoy stopping bad actors and keeping good people safe, then you’ll love T&S. It requires understanding new technologies and staying on top of breaking issues across society and the world. It also pays Big Tech salaries (no coding skills required).

How do you get into T&S?

That’s the tricky part. The short answer is: not easily. Most T&S orgs are part of Big Tech and (as a result) pay extremely well, so jobs are highly competitive. If you don’t know someone in the industry who can help refer you in, then you can learn more about T&S policies, current events, issues, regulations, and jobs at trustsafetyinstitute.com to improve your hiring chances and start doing meaningful work that helps people.
