Elon Musk has promised to clean up Twitter by showing the world why it boosts some tweets above others and purging it of automated accounts that noisily promote get-rich-quick schemes, products and politicians.


“If our Twitter bid succeeds, we will defeat the spam bots or die trying!” Musk tweeted April 21. “If someone is operating a bot and troll army, then I am definitely their enemy,” he said at the Met gala last weekend.

Vijaya Gadde came reluctantly to the decision that cemented her reputation on the right as Twitter’s “chief censor.” For years, the company’s top lawyer had resisted calls to boot then-President Donald Trump from his favorite social media platform.


Even after a violent pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol, Gadde explained during an emotional virtual company town hall on Jan. 8 that Trump hadn’t broken enough of Twitter’s rules against glorification of violence to merit a permanent ban of his account.

Clearview AI to stop selling facial recognition tool to private firms

A facial recognition company whose massive database has been used to identify Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine has agreed to stop its sales to private companies in the United States as part of a landmark settlement reining in a technology criticized as threatening Americans’ privacy rights.


The settlement, filed Monday in federal court in Illinois, marks the most significant court action yet against Clearview AI, a company known for downloading billions of people’s photos from social networks and other websites to build a face-search database sold to law enforcement.

China enacts strict livestreaming regulation to protect minors

China upgraded strict livestreaming-industry regulation over the weekend, including rules that forbid minors under the age of 16 to tip livestreamers or perform themselves.


The new regulation, which aims to protect underaged users, won't influence the booming Chinese livestreaming industry with features like virtual reality (VR) and Metaverse.


Meanwhile, major players including Douyin, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok, took measures to protect young users as early as a year ago.


Under the new rules, minors cannot tip livestreamers by buying virtual gifts.

Elon Musk’s accepted bid to purchase Twitter has triggered a lot of debate about what it means for the future of the social media platform, which plays an important role in determining the news and information many people–especially Americans—are exposed to.


Musk has said he wants to make Twitter an arena for free speech. It’s not clear what that will mean, and his statements have fueled speculation among both supporters and detractors.


As a corporation, Twitter can regulate speech on its platform as it chooses. There are bills being considered in the U.S. Congress and by the European Union that address social media regulation, but these are about transparency, accountability, illegal harmful content and protecting users’ rights, rather than regulating speech.

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.


Is T&S interesting?

That depends. If you enjoy stopping bad actors and keeping good people safe, then you’ll love T&S. It requires understanding new technologies and staying on top of breaking issues across society and the world. It also pays Big Tech salaries (no coding skills required).


How do you get into T&S?

That’s the tricky part. The short answer is: not easily. Most T&S orgs are part of Big Tech and (as a result) pay extremely well, so jobs are highly competitive.
