The announcement prompted a flurry of mixed reactions. Proponents feel the agency is necessary to expose Russia spreading false information - in some cases to cover up atrocities regarding the War in Ukraine.

The American Federation of Teachers on Wednesday encouraged the leaders of its members’ pension funds to support an independent evaluation of Facebook owner Meta’s risk management practices, which the teachers’ union said have failed to mitigate “clear threats” the social networking company poses to kids and teenagers.

AFT President Randi Weingarten asked state and local pension fund trustees, whose funds hold $6.3 billion in Meta stock, to vote in favor of a shareholder resolution that would instruct Meta’s board of directors to hire a law firm to evaluate the board’s performance at managing the risks posed by Facebook and Instagram.

Instagram must stop the scammers targeting Gen Z

Financial Times | May 05, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

I have a question for you. How do you know it’s really me writing this article? It looks genuine. There’s a picture of my face and it’s published on a media platform you trust.

What if I told you, valued reader, that I had a crypto investment opportunity that could rapidly double your money?

I would hope FT readers would immediately conclude the article must have been written by an imposter. Sadly, it’s much easier for impersonation scams to proliferate on social media platforms. Lloyds Bank recently reported a 155 percent annual increase in scams on Instagram in the past year, focused on the under-25s.

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.

Is T&S interesting?

That depends. If you enjoy stopping bad actors and keeping good people safe, then you’ll love T&S. It requires understanding new technologies and staying on top of breaking issues across society and the world. It also pays Big Tech salaries (no coding skills required).

How do you get into T&S?

That’s the tricky part. The short answer is: not easily. Most T&S orgs are part of Big Tech and (as a result) pay extremely well, so jobs are highly competitive. If you don’t know someone in the industry who can help refer you in, then you can learn more about T&S policies, current events, issues, regulations, and jobs at to improve your hiring chances and start doing meaningful work that helps people.
