These Mental Health, Prayer Apps Don't Have Your Privacy in Mind

Pcmag | May 02, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Mozilla has updated its Privacy Not Included buying guide with information about 32 apps related to mental health, and unfortunately, the findings are unlikely to bring anyone peace of mind.

The update covers popular meditation apps like Calm, Headspace, and Breathe, Think, Do with Sesame; therapy apps like Better Help, Talkspace, and Modern Health; and prayer apps like Pray.com, Glorify, and the King James Version Bible app offered by iDailybread.

Mozilla applied the "privacy not included" label to 28 apps in this category. The four exceptions are Wysa, PTSD Coach, Headspace, and Glorify. Of those, only Wysa and the PTSD Coach received a thumbs-up. Headspace received a neutral rating.

Report calls out abuse of social media by Minneapolis police

ABC News | May 02, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Among the scathing findings of an investigation launched after the police killing of George Floyd is that Minneapolis police used covert or bogus social media accounts to monitor Black individuals and groups despite having no clear public safety rationale for doing so.

The report released Wednesday by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights echoes numerous past revelations that the FBI and other law enforcement agencies have — sometimes illegally — secretly surveilled prominent people and communities of color even though they weren't involved in any criminal activity.

Hacking Russia was off-limits. The Ukraine war made it a free-for-all

Washington post | May 02, 202

Company Listed: Social Media

For more than a decade, U.S. cyber security experts have warned about Russian hacking that increasingly uses the labor power of financially motivated criminal gangs to achieve political goals, such as strategically leaking campaign emails.

Prolific ransomware groups in the last year and a half have shut down pandemic-battered hospitals, the key fuel conduit Colonial Pipeline and schools; published sensitive documents from corporate victims; and, in one case, pledged to step up attacks on American infrastructure if Russian technology was hobbled in retribution for the invasion of Ukraine.

How Social Media is Fueling Divisiveness

INTERNATIONAL POLICY DIGEST | May 02, 2022

Company Listed: Twitter, Facebook, YouTube

Social media platforms face a myriad of criticisms, from contributing to rising anxiety and suicide rates among American teenagers, to profiting from the business of selling personal data and comprising individual privacy. The Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 demonstrated that the zeitgeist of racial justice and equality could be organized through digital activism, which gained widespread support and online engagement.

Social media is an instrument of political change, but these changes are dangerously consequential. Amid the COVID-19 infodemic, the wake of the Donald Trump fueled-Capitol riots in the United States, and the increase in political polarization, the world is abandoning the perception that social media does not significantly impact domestic and world politics.

Biden disinformation czar previously warned about 'harmful' memes

NBC News | May 02, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Resurfaced tweets from Nina Jankowicz, the head of President Joe Biden's new "Disinformation Governance Board," show she is concerned about social media and tech companies allowing "maligned creativity" on their platforms.

"Maligned creativity" is, according to Jankowicz, a sort of code language in which users can hide their racist, sexist, transphobic, or other "harmful" content by use of memes so that such posts can avoid moderation teams and bans.

The Department of Homeland Security's Disinformation Governance Board, which critics have mockingly called the "Ministry of Truth," has been criticized as an Orwellian, partisan effort.

Partisan Fight Breaks Out Over New Disinformation Board

NY Times | May 02, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Nina Jankowicz’s new book, “How to Be a Woman Online,” chronicles the vitriol she and other women have faced from trolls and other malign actors. She’s now at the center of a new firestorm of criticism, this time over her appointment to lead an advisory board at the Department of Homeland Security on the threat of disinformation.

The creation of a board, announced last week, has turned into a partisan fight over disinformation itself — and what role, if any, the government should have in policing false, at times toxic, and even violent content online.

The Disinformation Governance Board is a bad name and a sillier idea

Washington post | May 02, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Nothing is more important to the future of our democracy than the fight against disinformation. But a new Department of Homeland Security unit — ominously called the Disinformation Governance Board — is not helping. To the contrary, it only promises to provide aid and comfort to the enemies of truth.

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas should pull the plug on the new board. Like, yesterday. And never speak of it again.
