State Department pursues ‘people-people’ diplomacy through video games

The United States government’s most high-level foray into video game diplomacy concluded its first school year last month.


A total of 450 students from across the United States, Israel, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain participated in the 10-week program, Game Exchange, completing a total of 170 new video games based on the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. Participants engaged in up to three shared video conference calls with their international peers at a sister school in addition to either seven or eight sessions, totaling between 20-25 hours, among themselves. Teachers were given paid training to help students navigate the game development process.

Sgt. Rahasenfratz, in a now-viral rant, questioned how she is supposed to 'defend the Constitution and country' when policy shows it doesn't 'give a rat’s a** about me.

Facebook Created a Tool to Access Deleted Messages, Claims Ex-Employee

Brennan Lawson, a former Facebook employee, sued the social media giant's parent company, Meta Platforms, on Tuesday, 6 July, for allegedly terminating his employment over concerns that he raised about an invasive tool that, he claims, allows Facebook to retrieve and access deleted messages.


Lawson, a former US Air Force veteran, was hired in 2018 as a senior risk & response escalations specialist in Community Operation as part of Facebook’s Global Escalation Team. His job was similar to that of a content moderator or screener.

Twitter battles India for control of social media content

Twitter's decision to reject Indian demands that it take down content and block accounts the government dislikes shows a tough new tack by social media giants that analysts say could set a precedent in the face of growing regulatory crackdowns.

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.


Is T&S interesting?

That depends. If you enjoy stopping bad actors and keeping good people safe, then you’ll love T&S. It requires understanding new technologies and staying on top of breaking issues across society and the world. It also pays Big Tech salaries (no coding skills required).


How do you get into T&S?

That’s the tricky part. The short answer is: not easily. Most T&S orgs are part of Big Tech and (as a result) pay extremely well, so jobs are highly competitive.
