Father of Edmonton girl says daughter was manipulated online before disappearance

An Edmonton man says his daughter was fun-loving and kind but started to change as the 13-year-old got caught up in psychological games with an older man online.
Noah Madrano, 40, was arrested by FBI agents in Oregon a week after the girl was reported missing. He is charged with rape, sexual abuse and kidnapping and is to appear again in Oregon City court July 12.

Cyberbullies in Japan could now face up to a year in prison, as the government cracks down on online abuse following the suicide of a 22-year-old professional wrestler and reality TV star who was hounded on social media.
New penalties for public abuse as part of a revised law came into effect Thursday, allowing fines of up to 300,000 yen ($2,200) from the previous 10,000 yen and jail sentences of up to 12 months compared with 29 days previously.

PHNOM PENH: About 400,000 cases of online sexual abuse and exploitation were reported in Cambodia last year, more than double the number reported in 2020.
The Cambodian Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications said the huge number of cases has prompted the government to launch a programme to protect minors from being exploited.

The European Parliament on Tuesday approved the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act, two landmark proposals to rein in how the tech giants moderate content and treat competitors — setting a new standard for digital regulation while similar proposals in Washington languish.
Together, the measures would force the world’s largest tech companies to more aggressively tackle harmful content, disclose more data to external researchers and make their services interoperable with competitors’ products. They would also prohibit large companies from giving their own products preferential treatment and block app stores from requiring that developers use their payment systems.

Apple unveils new security feature to block government spyware

Apple said Wednesday that it will introduce an innovative security feature to give potential targets of government hacking an easy way to make their iPhones safer.
The company said it would be releasing the new “Lockdown Mode” in test versions of its operating systems shortly, with full distribution in the fall as part of iOS 16 for iPhones as well as the operating systems for iPads and Mac computers.
