Abortion is illegal for millions. Will Big Tech help prosecute it?
Washington Post | June 29, 2022
Company Listed: Social Media
Even before Roe v. Wade was overturned, tech workers and privacy advocates had a big question: Will Big Tech help in abortion prosecutions by sharing user data with police?
Nearly a week since the Supreme Court made abortion illegal for millions of Americans, the companies still haven’t given an answer. And some employees are getting frustrated, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution.
Planned Parenthood suspends marketing trackers on abortion search pages
Washington Post | June 30, 2022
Company Listed: Google, Facebook Meta and TikTok
Planned Parenthood said it will remove the marketing trackers on its search pages related to abortions and that no protected health information has been breached thus far.
The comments came after The Washington Post reported Wednesday findings from Lockdown Privacy, the maker of an app that blocks online trackers, showing that when visitors used the website’s search function to find an abortion provider and begin to schedule an appointment, Planned Parenthood shared data on those actions with third-party tracking companies including Google, Facebook and TikTok.

Company Listed: Social Media
A proposal to hire government-funded fact-checkers to root out fake news has been rejected by Scotland’s public health minister, who praised mainstream reporting of science and health.
The Royal Society of Edinburgh had called on the Scottish government to establish “an independent fact-checking service so that the scientific information being shared and used, particularly on social media, isaccurate”.

Push to rein in social media sweeps the states
Politico | June 29, 2022
Company Listed: Social Media
Efforts to police speech on social media are spreading across the country, with lawmakers in 34 states pushing bills that are already setting up court battles with tech giants over the First Amendment.
State legislators have introduced more than 100 bills in the past year aiming to regulate how social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter handle their users’ posts, according to POLITICO’s analysis of data from the National Conference of State Legislatures. However, only three bills have become law, including statutes in Texas and Florida aimed at punishing platforms that Republicans accuse of censoring conservatives — and federal courts have blocked those two states’ measures from taking effect.
Supreme Court poised to deal a blow to Biden’s tech regulators, too
Washington Post | June 30, 2022
Company Listed: Google, Facebook Meta and TikTok
The Supreme Court is widely expected to issue a ruling this week hobbling federal agencies’ regulatory powers, a move that may deal a blow to President Biden’s tech enforcers.
While the topic of the case — the government’s ability to curb greenhouse emissions — is far removed from Silicon Valley, it’s likely to have sweeping implications for key agencies overseeing the tech sector, experts say.
Twitter Could Take These Steps to Slow Viral Misinformation, Researchers Say
Washington Post | June 30, 2022
Company Listed: Twitter, Facebook Meta and Instagram
Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are rife with misinformation that can easily go viral. One study looked at millions of tweets and found that a handful of steps could be taken to slow the spread of false information on Twitter.
Researchers with the University of Washington Center for an Informed Public found that combining multiple measures -- including deplatforming repeat misinformation offenders, removing false claims and warning people about posts that contain false information -- could reduce the volume of misinformation on Twitter by 53.4%. The study's findings were published in the journal Nature last week.
China’s internet censorship becomes global compliance problem
FCPA Blog | June 30, 2022
Company Listed: Social Media
This post is about internet censorship. That, ironically, is a prohibited topic under China’s rapidly expanding censorship regime. Because I’ll talk about SEC registrants who warn investors about China’s internet censorship as a risk factor, that’ll likely add to the illegality. And by gratuitously mentioning Covid-19, democracy, human rights, Taiwan and Hong Kong, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and corruption in the PRC Communist Party, I’m compounding my offenses.
No wonder issuers operating in China have begun including warnings about censorship. Here’s what an e-commerce company incorporated in the Cayman Islands and based in Guangdong Province said in an SEC filing earlier this month (with my emphasis).
