Spotify chief content officer calls Joe Rogan events a 'learning experience'
Reuters | February 9, 2022
Company Listed: Spotify
Spotify's (SPOT.N) chief content officer Dawn Ostroff told advertisers at a conference on Wednesday that the backlash around popular U.S. podcaster Joe Rogan's podcast had been a "real learning experience" for the streaming service.
We do feel that we have a responsibility to support creator expression, but also balance that creator expression with safety for our users and for our advertisers," said Ostroff, who has been a key driver in Spotify's work to turn the platform into a top podcast hub, speaking at an Interactive Advertising Bureau annual conference in New York.
The streaming giant has been under fire after Rogan, who signed a $100-million deal with Spotify in 2020, aired controversial COVID-19 views on his show and drew protests from artists Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and India Arie. Young said Spotify had "become the home of life-threatening COVID misinformation.
As DHS issues security warning, Trump throws fuel on fire

For many Americans, Donald Trump’s conspiratorial lies about his 2020 defeat have become a nuisance, creating an annoying background noise to our daily public life. But as we’ve discussed, for those responsible for monitoring domestic security threats, the Republican’s nonsense is more menacing.
Politico reported last summer, for example, on “concerns” at the Department of Homeland Security about Trump’s election conspiracy theories. CNN reported soon after that Justice Department officials also concluded that the former president’s delusional claims increased the risk of political violence from his most rabid followers.
NBC News reported in August that the Department of Homeland Security issued a bulletin to local police departments, warning that false claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election were “fueling calls for violence on social media.”

Days after News4JAX reported about an Instagram page labeled as coming from Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts that included photos of students using the bathroom, the page’s content was removed from the social media platform.
A spokesperson for Duval County Public Schools said it had not been aware of the page until contacted by News4JAX and that staff immediately filed a report against the page, encouraging other parents to do the same.
School leadership has been notified and we have reported this account to Instagram,” the DCPS spokesperson said. “It is critical that individuals immediately report concerning social media content to the appropriate platform directly so the issue can be addressed.”
How ShotSpotter fights criticism and leverages federal cash to win police contracts
NBC News | Feb 10, 2022
Company Listed: Shotspotter
One morning in late August, John Johnson, a prosecutor in Pulaski County, Arkansas, opened an urgent email from the CEO of ShotSpotter, a company that makes gunshot detection devices.
In the 1,200-word letter, sent to law enforcement agencies around the country, CEO Ralph Clark offered a detailed response to an article by The Associated Press that asserted ShotSpotter technology was flawed. The company uses acoustic sensors placed on buildings and lampposts to identify gunshots and determine where the trigger was pulled, to help police respond faster to gunfire; critics have questioned the technology’s effectiveness. Clark ended with a plea to the company’s clients, including dozens of police commanders and prosecutors, to join its public relations offensive.
“We would be grateful if you could start to engage with the media now about the positive impact it has made in your city or town, whether through interviews, bylined pieces or social media posts,” he wrote.
But Johnson, the chief deputy for Arkansas’ Sixth Judicial District Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, hadn’t seen much proof that ShotSpotter was helping the problem in Little Rock, which was suffering from one of its worst years of gun violence. He thought the money Little Rock was paying the company — about $143,000 a year to lease gunshot detection devices covering a 2-square-mile section of the city, backed by a federal grant — would get better results if it was used on a more proven technology.
