Instagram responds to viral post claiming how stalkers can get your exact location

Social networking platform Instagram has come out with its response following rumours that its latest update which activates the "Precise Location" option for its users can make them vulnerable to criminals and stalkers. Acknowledging the rumour, Instagram shared that “we’ve seen a meme going around about how Instagram uses 'precise location.'" Instagram clarified its stance further by addressing that “to be clear, we don’t share your location with others. Similar to other social media companies, we use precise location for things like location tags and maps features." According to Instagram, people can manage ‘Location Services’ via their device settings, and tag locations on their posts if they want to share that information.

Duke volleyball game in Utah moved after racist abuse hurled at Black player

Duke University women’s volleyball match on Saturday was moved to an alternate location in Provo, Utah, after racial slurs were hurled at a black player from the crowd during Friday’s match with BYU, school officials said.


The incident prompted BYU to apologize and ban a fan identified as the perpetrator.


Lesa Pamplin, godmother of the black Duke player, wrote on Twitter that while playing her 19-year-old goddaughter, Rachel Richardson, had been subjected to racist slurs every time she served.

Parliament panel grills Twitter officials over data security, privacy

Facebook Settles Privacy Lawsuit over Cambridge Analytica Data Grab

Facebook has agreed to settle a long-running lawsuit over claims that the company violated users' privacy by sharing their information with outside developers, including the defunct political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, according to court papers filed Friday.

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.


Is T&S interesting?

That depends. If you enjoy stopping bad actors and keeping good people safe, then you’ll love T&S. It requires understanding new technologies and staying on top of breaking issues across society and the world. It also pays Big Tech salaries (no coding skills required).


How do you get into T&S?

That’s the tricky part. The short answer is: not easily. Most T&S orgs are part of Big Tech and (as a result) pay extremely well, so jobs are highly competitive.
