Facebook reveals cause of bizarre celebrity spam glitch

Facebook experienced an odd glitch Wednesday morning that caused some users to see an abnormally large number of celebrity-related posts in their content feeds.

Screenshots circulating on Twitter indicated that affected users’ feeds were bombarded with posts replying to celebrity fan pages and other accounts related to public figures. The posts ranged from text replies to photos and weird memes.

Twitter insists spam accounts fewer than 5% in response to SEC

Twitter has reiterated that spam accounts on its platform represent fewer than 5% of its total users, in response to the Securities and Exchange Commission’s letter in June seeking details on its methodology.

“Twitter believes that it already adequately discloses the methodology that it uses in calculating these figures,” the company said in a letter dated June 22 to the regulator, according to its filing on Wednesday.

Hope not hate: most social media posts on Lionesses positive, study shows

The vast majority of social media posts directed at England women’s triumphant Euro 2022 football players across a three-month period were positive, research has found.

The study of 78,141 posts on Twitter, Reddit and the imageboard website 4chan identified more than 50,000 positive posts – roughly one “hate” post for every 125 “hope” ones.

Child-safety advocates are blasting Twitter and lining up to support a lawsuit that alleges the social network declined to remove videos depicting the sexual exploitation of minors despite pleas from a victim and his family.

“It’s child sexual abuse material. He was 13 years old and being extorted. What the hell is Twitter doing?” asked Hany Farid, a professor at the School of Information at UC Berkeley.

West Bromwich man sentenced after sexually assaulting teenage girl he met on Snapchat

A man from West Bromwich has been jailed for seven years for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.

Hanveer Sunner, 22, of Springfield Crescent, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday 23 August).

He will also be included on the sex offenders' register for life.

Snapchat has agreed to pay a $35 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit in Illinois over claims that the company was collecting private data via its filters.

Snapchat's parent company, Snap, agreed to pay the settlement to resolve a class-action suit that claimed the photo-sharing app's filters and lenses violated the state's Biometric Information Privacy Act by collecting data without user consent. Now state residents may get a small payout if they have used the filters in the last seven years.

Twitter whistleblower to testify in Congress about security failures

Twitter whistleblower Peiter Zatko will testify before the Senate about his allegations of security failures at the social network, the Senate Judiciary Committee announced on Wednesday.

The hearing is scheduled for Sept. 13, and Zatko, Twitter’s former security chief who is also known as “Mudge,” will appear pursuant to a subpoena. The hearing was announced one day after The Washington Post reported on Zatko’s whistleblower complaint to federal regulators that alleges “extreme, egregious deficiencies” in its defenses against hackers, as well as meager efforts to fight spam.

Facebook and Twitter disrupted a web of accounts that were covertly seeking to influence users in the Middle East and Asia with pro-western perspectives about international politics, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to a new report from social media analytics firm Graphika and Stanford University.

The covert influence operation used accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media giants to promote narratives supporting the interests of the United States and its allies while opposing countries, including Russia, China, and Iran, according to the report.
