Citing a mental health crisis among young people, California lawmakers target social media

Karla Garcia said her son’s social media addiction started in fourth grade, when he got his own computer for virtual learning and logged on to YouTube. Now, two years later, the video-sharing site has replaced both schoolwork and the activities he used to love — like composing music or serenading his friends on the piano, she said.

“He just has to have his YouTube,” said Garcia, 56, of West Los Angeles.

Alessandro Greco, now 11 and a soon-to-be sixth grader, watches videos even when he tells his mom that he is starting homework, making his bed, or practicing his instrument. When she confronts him, she said, he gets frustrated and says he hates himself because he feels like watching YouTube isn’t a choice.

Indonesia Blocks Access to Yahoo, PayPal, and Several Gaming Platforms

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has officially blocked access to the gaming platform, Steam, as well as payment firm PayPal, and search engine, Yahoo after licensing issues.

The reports say some of the most widely-played games like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive had been blocked.

Online abuse in football: ‘the dark side to the beautiful game’

Analysis of more than two million Twitter posts has revealed the scale of online abuse directed at Premier League footballers. A report published by the media regulator Ofcom and The Alan Turing Institute found that of the 2.3m tweets sent during the first half of the 2021-2022 season, more than 60,000 were abusive.

An average of 362 abusive tweets were sent every day during that period, equivalent to “one every four minutes”, Ofcom said. Seven in ten Premier League stars were affected and 12 particular players faced “a barrage of abuse” – each receiving an average 15 abusive tweets daily. Around one in 12 personal attacks targeted a victim’s protected characteristic, such as their race or gender.

Meta sued for violating patient privacy with data tracking tool

Facebook’s parent company Meta and major US hospitals violated medical privacy laws with a tracking tool that sends health information to Facebook, two proposed class-action lawsuits allege.

The lawsuits, filed in the Northern District of California in June and July, focus on the Meta Pixel tracking tool. The tool can be installed on websites to provide analytics on Facebook and Instagram ads. It also collects information about how people click around and input information into those websites.

India nixes privacy bill that alarmed big tech companies, works on new law

India's government on Wednesday withdrew a data protection and privacy bill which was first proposed in 2019 and had alarmed big technology companies such as Facebook and Google, announcing it was working on a new comprehensive law.

The 2019 law had proposed stringent regulations on cross-border data flows and proposed giving the Indian government powers to seek user data from companies, seen as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stricter regulation of tech giants.
