ALISTAIR HEATHER: From politics to our language – social media bots are reshaping Scotland
The Courier | August 04, 2022
Company Listed: Social Media
These accounts all feel a bit ‘fake’. Very one-note and angry.
Lots of these toxic accounts, across Twitter and Facebook in particular, seem to focus their energies tearing into Scottish issues like the upcoming referendum, the Scots language, and SNP and Tory parties.
And since many of us rely on social media for our news and much of our social interaction, it’s worth the occasional health check, to see how far we can trust what we’re seeing.
Dozens of fake news websites and social media accounts pushed pro-China talking points
CNBC | August 04, 2022
Company Listed: Social Media
A Chinese marketing firm hosted a ring of at least 72 fake news sites in 11 languages with corresponding fake social media personas that pushed Chinese government talking points, according to research published Thursday.
NBC News has viewed the English-language sites, which obscure their ownership and authors. Their articles frequently criticized the U.S. and the West, and appeared to attempt to smooth over concerns in those countries, such as China limiting democracy in Hong Kong and putting ethnic minority Uyghur citizens into detention camps.

Mandiant said it found 72 suspected false news sites targeting audiences in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia with messages critical of the U.S. and boosting China.
Meta Outlines Evolving Efforts to Combat Mass Reporting and ‘Brigading’ in Latest Threat Report
Social Media Today | August 04, 2022
Company Listed: Meta
Meta has published its latest Adversarial Threat Report, which looks at all the malicious and scam networks that it detected and took action against in Q2 2022.
And much of it is as we’ve come to expect – Meta removed two clusters of hacker groups operating in South East Asia, as well as a troll farm originating from Russia, which targeted global public discourse about the war in Ukraine, in an effort to seed pro-Russia sentiment.

International Association of Privacy Professionals | August 04, 2022
Company Listed: Social Media
Cyberscoop reports U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., wrote U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts urging improved privacy practices for court filings and records. "Federal court rules — required by Congress — mandate that court filings be scrubbed of personal information before they are publicly available," Wyden wrote, noting a recent report from the court's Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure, citing inconsistencies with enforcing and enacting privacy rules. Issues with redactions may extend to Social Security numbers, birthdates, full names and more.

Philippine News Agency | August 04, 2022
Company Listed: Social Media
Several studies have revealed that the country has become one of the world’s largest sources of online child sexual exploitation and abuse cases with a rapid increase in cyber tip reports, aggravated by the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
With Republic Act 11930 or the Anti-Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) Law, which lapsed into law last July 30, several child rights groups such as the Child Rights Network (CRN) said this marks the dawn of safer online spaces for children.
India Withdraws a Proposed Law on Data Protection
NY Times | August 04, 2022
Company Listed: Social Media
The Indian government on Wednesday unexpectedly withdrew a proposed bill on data protection that a panel of lawmakers had been laboring over for more than two years, saying it was working on a new law.
The abandoned legislation, Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019, would have required internet companies like Meta and Google to get specific permission for most uses of a person’s data, and would have eased the process of asking for such personal data to be erased. Countries worldwide have been adopting such steps, including in Europe with the General Data Protection Regulation.
Classic Internet Censorship
NY Times | August 04, 2022
Company Listed: Google, Meta, Netflix, TikTok, Apple, Twitter
I want us to consider the implications of this new reality: In three of the four most populous countries in the world, governments have now given themselves the power to order that the internet be wiped of citizens’ posts that the authorities don’t like.
Indonesia — the world’s fourth-most populous country, and a democracy — is in the process of implementing what civil rights organizations say are overly broad regulations to demand removal of online speech that officials consider a disturbance to society or public order. Most major internet companies, including Google, Meta, Netflix, TikTok, Apple and Twitter have effectively agreed to go along with the rules, for now.
