Why dangerous content thrives on Facebook and TikTok in Kenya

Washington Post | July 31, 2022

Company Listed: TikTok, Facebook

The shooter approaches from behind, raising a pistol to his victim’s head. He pulls the trigger and “pop,” a lifeless body slumps forward. The shot cuts to another execution, and another. The video was posted on Facebook, in a large group of al-Shabab and Islamic State supporters, where different versions were viewed thousands of times before being taken down.

As Facebook and its competitor TikTok grow at breakneck speed in Kenya, and across Africa, researchers say the technology companies are failing to keep pace with a proliferation of terrorist content, hate speech and false information, taking advantage of poor regulatory frameworks to avoid stricter oversight.

Relief Web | August 01, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Migrants make up a considerable proportion of the detected victims of trafficking in persons around the world, accounting for 65% of victims identified in Western and Southern Europe, 60% in the Middle East, 55% in East Asia and the Pacific, 50% in Central and South-Eastern Europe, and 25% in North America. In recent times, the internet has increasingly been used to advertise false jobs, recruit and exploit these victims.

On the 2022 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, commemorated under the theme ‘use and abuse of technology’, the United Nations Network on Migration urges States to fully leverage the opportunities presented by technology to strengthen the response to trafficking in persons while ensuring respect, protection and fulfillment of the human rights of all migrants.

TikTok under Australian privacy watchdog scrutiny

Financial Review | August 01, 2022

Company Listed: TikTok

Australia’s privacy watchdog is looking into TikTok’s data collection and permissions requests after fresh analysis of its source code raised alarm about the viral video app’s information gathering practices.

Two weeks ago, The Australian Financial Review reported analysis by Canberra-based cyber security and intelligence firm Internet 2.0 that revealed TikTok checks its users’ device location at least once an hour; continuously requests access to contacts even if the user originally denies; maps a device’s running apps and all installed apps; and more as part of broad permissions asked of users.

TikTok for Under 13: What Are Different Guidelines of TikTok for Different Age Groups?

Federal Regulations Advisor | August 01, 2022

Company Listed: TikTok

TikTok is a free social networking application that enables you to watch, make, and share videos — frequently set to the most popular songs — directly from your mobile device. TikTok is tremendously popular, with over 100 million users in the United States alone, because of its creative video editing features, viral dances, and celebrity cameos.

When used carefully and responsibly, the app may be a fun and creative outlet for preteens and teenagers (and their parents, too!). While the majority of TikTok is a harmless form of entertainment, there are legitimate worries over the app’s use by children. Similar to other social networks, you must utilise privacy settings to limit the amount of information you and your children share.

T&S FAQs

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.

Is T&S interesting?

That depends. If you enjoy stopping bad actors and keeping good people safe, then you’ll love T&S. It requires understanding new technologies and staying on top of breaking issues across society and the world. It also pays Big Tech salaries (no coding skills required).

How do you get into T&S?

That’s the tricky part. The short answer is: not easily. Most T&S orgs are part of Big Tech and (as a result) pay extremely well, so jobs are highly competitive. If you don’t know someone in the industry who can help refer you in, then you can learn more about T&S policies, current events, issues, regulations, and jobs at trustsafetyinstitute.com to improve your hiring chances and start doing meaningful work that helps people.
