How End-To-End Encryption Impacts Human Rights? The Good and The Bad

Medianama | April 21, 2022

Company Listed: Meta

End-to-end encryption of messaging directly enables the right to privacy, which in turn enables other rights such as freedom of expression, association, opinion, religion, movement, and bodily security,” Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) said in its report on the impact of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) published on April 4.

While end-to-end encryption is being promoted by companies and civil groups for its privacy benefits, governments and law enforcement agencies have been against it because E2EE makes it hard for them to track down criminals. The BSR report lays out the arguments that exist on both sides of this debate.

Company Listed: Social Media

HANOI/SINGAPORE- Vietnam is preparing new rules requiring social media firms to take down content it deems illegal within 24 hours, three people with direct knowledge of the matter said.

The planned amendments to current law will cement Vietnam, a $1 billion market for Facebook, as one of the world's most stringent regimes for social media firms and will strengthen the ruling Communist Party's hand as it cracks down on "anti-state" activity.

The 24-hour time frame to take down "illegal content and services" will not have a grace period, while active "illegal livestreams" must be blocked within three hours, the people said. Companies that do not meet the deadlines could see their platforms banned in the country, they added.

As Europe Approves New Tech Laws, the U.S. Falls Further Behind

NY Times | April 21, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

In just the last few years, Europe has seen a landmark law for online privacy take effect, approved sweeping regulations to curb the dominance of the tech giants and on Friday was nearing a deal on new legislation to protect its citizens from harmful online content.

For those keeping score, that’s Europe: three. United States: zero.

The United States may be the birthplace of the iPhone and the most widely used search engine and social network, and it could also bring the world into the so-called metaverse. But global leadership on tech regulations is taking place more than 3,000 miles from Washington, by European leaders representing 27 nations with 24 languages, who have nonetheless been able to agree on basic online protections for their 450 million or so citizens.
