How End-To-End Encryption Impacts Human Rights? The Good and The Bad

Medianama | April 21, 2022

Company Listed: Meta

End-to-end encryption of messaging directly enables the right to privacy, which in turn enables other rights such as freedom of expression, association, opinion, religion, movement, and bodily security,” Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) said in its report on the impact of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) published on April 4.

While end-to-end encryption is being promoted by companies and civil groups for its privacy benefits, governments and law enforcement agencies have been against it because E2EE makes it hard for them to track down criminals. The BSR report lays out the arguments that exist on both sides of this debate.

Company Listed: Google

A Russian court has fined Alphabet Inc.'s (GOOGL.O) Google 11 million roubles ($137,763) for failing to delete what it terms "fake" information about the conflict in Ukraine and YouTube videos produced by Ukrainian far-right groups, TASS reported.

Russia's communications watchdog said earlier this month that it was taking steps to punish Google for "spreading fakes" on YouTube, and has previously warned the U.S. company that it would be fined if it failed to comply, part of a wider battle with foreign tech firms and media to control information flows.

Vietnam plans 24-hour take-down law for "illegal" social media content: sources

Zawya | April 21, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

HANOI/SINGAPORE- Vietnam is preparing new rules requiring social media firms to take down content it deems illegal within 24 hours, three people with direct knowledge of the matter said.

The planned amendments to current law will cement Vietnam, a $1 billion market for Facebook, as one of the world's most stringent regimes for social media firms and will strengthen the ruling Communist Party's hand as it cracks down on "anti-state" activity.

The 24-hour time frame to take down "illegal content and services" will not have a grace period, while active "illegal livestreams" must be blocked within three hours, the people said. Companies that do not meet the deadlines could see their platforms banned in the country, they added.

It would also become an offense to offer to write or commission fake reviews.

As Europe Approves New Tech Laws, the U.S. Falls Further Behind

NY Times | April 21, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

In just the last few years, Europe has seen a landmark law for online privacy take effect, approved sweeping regulations to curb the dominance of the tech giants and on Friday was nearing a deal on new legislation to protect its citizens from harmful online content.

For those keeping score, that’s Europe: three. United States: zero.

The United States may be the birthplace of the iPhone and the most widely used search engine and social network, and it could also bring the world into the so-called metaverse. But global leadership on tech regulations is taking place more than 3,000 miles from Washington, by European leaders representing 27 nations with 24 languages, who have nonetheless been able to agree on basic online protections for their 450 million or so citizens.

T&S Good News

Some of the good news in the T&S industry that leaders want to know

Google will let users reject all cookies after French fine

Protocol | April 21, 2022

Company Listed: Google

When faced with the annoying cookie pop-up on every website — you know the one — sometimes it's easier to "accept all" cookies than to manage cookie preferences, a thing I never ever want to do. In Europe, Google will now have to give users the option to "reject all" cookies. Now we just have to pray that this makes it to the U.S.

European YouTube and Search users will now have the option to reject all cookies when they visit websites. Previously, the company offered users a range of options to customize their cookie preferences, with a single, bolded button suggesting they should “accept all.” If users wanted to customize their preferences, they were forced to navigate through different menus in a tedious process. Clicking “accept all" was simply easier. (We've all been there.)

What is T&S?

Great question (and one the industry hasn’t fully agreed upon). Think of Trust & Safety as the organization that protects social media and Big Tech companies and users from online abuse. As long as users are able to generate content online, time has told us that a minority of these users will create content that is offensive, scandalous, fraudulent, disingenuous, misinformative, hateful, spiteful, and harmful. T&S fights this with flexible policies, resilient operations, and informed detections.

Is T&S interesting?

That depends. If you enjoy stopping bad actors and keeping good people safe, then you’ll love T&S. It requires understanding new technologies and staying on top of breaking issues across society and the world. It also pays Big Tech salaries (no coding skills required).

How do you get into T&S?

That’s the tricky part. The short answer is: not easily. Most T&S orgs are part of Big Tech and (as a result) pay extremely well, so jobs are highly competitive. If you don’t know someone in the industry who can help refer you in, then you can learn more about T&S policies, current events, issues, regulations, and jobs at to improve your hiring chances and start doing meaningful work that helps people.
