APAC consumers share more data, but will ditch firms over security breach

Zdnet | April 19, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Consumers in Singapore and Australia share more personal information now than they did two years ago, but more in the two Asian markets will ditch service providers that suffer a data breach than their global counterparts. The former also are disgruntled about having to provide their data to use online services.

Some 67% of respondents across Singapore and Australia felt they had little choice but to divulge their personal information in order to use online services. In fact, 54% said they shared their data with so many organizations online each day that they could not verify each company's ability to safeguard personal data, according to a survey commissioned by security vendor Imperva.

Social media sharing: how much is too much?

Piquenewsmagazine | April 18, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media, Facebook

Vancouver cybersleuth Derek Manky says if you wouldn’t share personal information in a waiting room, you shouldn’t be sharing it on social media.

"A best foot forward is a zero-trust environment,” Manky said. "There's too much trust online."

He said the more information you post on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the greater the chances that a cybercrook can profile you and target you to be scammed.

Passing the buck, Eric? NYC Mayor Adams blasts social media for 'brewing' online hatred that stoked subway shooting suspect Frank James: Says firms must 'step-up' to prevent crime

Dailymail | April 18, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

Mayor Eric Adams has raised eyebrows after pinning part of the blame for NYC's crime wave on social media firms' failure to police violent uploads.

The mayor, 61, was asked whether we need a better way to 'track' potentially dangerous individuals like Frank James, who is accused of shooting 10 people at a subway in Brooklyn last week.

James had posted hate-filled videos on YouTube, including one just a day before the attack in which he admitted: 'I can say I wanted to kill people. I wanted to watch people die.'

An Egyptian court has reduced TikTok influencer Haneen Hossam’s 10-year “human trafficking” sentence to three years, a judicial source has said.

The source told the AFP news agency on Monday that despite Hossam’s jail time being cut, she was also fined 200,000 Egyptian pounds ($10,740) by the Cairo Criminal Court.

The targeting of female influencers has rekindled a heated debate in Egypt over what constitutes individual freedoms and social values.

Policy recommendations for addressing content moderation in podcasts

Bookings | April 18, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

A great reckoning has arrived for content moderation in podcasts. Just as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other digital platforms have struggled for years with difficult questions about what content to allow on their platforms, podcast apps must now weigh them as well. What speech should be permitted? What speech should be shared? And what principles should inform those decisions?

Although there are insights to be gleaned from these ongoing discussions, addressing the spread of hate speech, misinformation, and related content via podcasts is different than on other social-media platforms. Whereas digital platforms host user-generated content themselves, most podcasts are hosted on the open web. Podcasting apps typically work by plugging into an external RSS feed, downloading a given podcast, and then playing it. As a result, the main question facing podcasting apps is not what content to host and publish, but instead what content to play and amplify.

Instagram Tests New Safety Feature For Scrolling Through The Platform & Allows Users To Save Posts Within A Chat

Digital information world | April 18, 2022

Company Listed: Instagram

Instagram is reportedly working on a Safe Browsing option in its settings, and is also adding a Collaborative Collection feature to its chat.

Both of these features have come to us via screenshots posted by social media researcher and reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi. There’s not a lot to discuss about the features since they’re not available across all platforms, leaving details a little sparse. But the screenshots provide just enough context to start a conversation regarding them. The first one that we’ll discuss is the new Safe Browsing option. Instagram’s been attempting to make the platform safer for individuals on the platform, offering different tools to this end. Other than upping the ante on its community guidelines, Instagram’s also offered users a number of censorship options to protect them from hate speech and the like. There’s also been discussion regarding the creation of an “Instagram Kids” platform, although further development on the project was halted back in late 2021. Then again, it’s clear that Meta’s attempting to very publicly push these safety features, and I’m sure that much of this publicity can be traced back to the scathing leaks by whistleblower Frances Haugen.
