Morningconsult | April 11, 2022

Tech companies have been the subject of sustained criticism in recent years for lax approaches to data protection, content moderation, user safety and impacts on mental health.

Apple, Meta gave user data to hackers pretending to be govt officials: Report

Menafn | April 10, 2022

Company Listed: Apple, Meta

According to three people familiar with the situation, Apple Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, supplied consumer data to hackers impersonating law enforcement authorities. In response to the fake“emergency data requests,” Apple and Meta gave user data. It was the customer's address, phone number, and IP address, in mid-2021.

As per the report, such demands usually only get grants with a search warrant or subpoena signed by a court. The emergency demands, on the other hand, do not require a court order.

The same hackers sent a bogus legal request to Snap Inc., but it's unclear whether the firm responded with data. It's also unclear how many times the companies released information in response to fictitious court requests.

Policy recommendations to Facebook during times of war

Moderndiplomacy | April 09, 2022

Company Listed: Social Media

In today’s digital world, it is an undeniable fact that social media has become a vital platform to carry out public and propagandist activities. Its use has even sometimes harmed communities through misinformation and fake news. With the plethora of information out there on Facebook, it’s hard for people to filter real and fake news. Platforms like Facebook, Whatsapp and YouTube form the major part of people’s lives in today’s world and more so in crucial times like war. Although major social media platforms have suspended their services in Russia, the negative consequences of social media have not been curbed fully.

Social Media and War

The use of social media is increasingly becoming a new weapon in modern warfare. It is impacting military and civilian lives, leaking wrong information and spreading rumors. When Facebook and Twitter continue playing violent videos of the war, it adds more anxiety in the lives of people actually facing the war. The Russia- Ukraine war is not the first social- media war but definitely the most seen on digital platforms. The use of media by Russians to interfere with 2016 US elections is a debated fact. The Cambridge Analytica scandal has played a role in revealing the power Facebook has in influencing global opinion.

Business-Standard | April 11, 2022

Company Listed: Meta

Meta (formerly Facebook) is ending an exception to its existing rules that allowed users to post private residential information of people on its platforms if it was "publicly available" elsewhere.

Reacting to a decision by Facebook Oversight Board, Meta agreed to remove the exception from its policy.

"As the board notes in this recommendation, removing the exception for 'publicly available' private residential information may limit the availability of this information on Facebook and Instagram when it is still publicly available elsewhere," the company said.
